Over the last few months the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood has been trying to contest municipal elections. It has been trying to field candidates, hold rallies, put up posters, and participate in the political process while ruling out the use of violence in response to government repression. The Egyptian government has responded by arresting hundreds of its members (including the moderate proprietor of the Ikhwanweb English site, Khaled Hamza, whose detention was just renewed for yet another 15 days), breaking up rallies, disqualifying 90% of its candidates, and doing everything it can to prevent the leading opposition group in the country from participating in elections.
I really think it's time for another panel on whether the Muslim Brotherhood really believes in democracy.
I am continuously grateful for you coverage on Egypt, particularly of the MBs. I know you take a lot of flack for it, but dont think it's not appreciated--it truly is--by thousands of your readers. Now...I am not sure if you are a Muslim or not, and this isn't a particularly "Islamic" blog, but I would be PROUD to have you join us!!! Hope you don't mind the plug! If you do, feel free to delete. Wish you'd join! Thanks!
