Back in the old days, before the war, I gave a lot of lectures about Iraq. And I would always argue - often in the face of considerable skepticism - that the most likely outcome in the event of an American invasion of Iraq was what I called "Not-dam Hussein": a friendly dictator that looked a lot like Saddam, only without the baggage.
But now that Iyad Allawi is in control, I have to admit that I was totally wrong. He may be an ex-Baathist, an enthusiastic strongman devoted to law and order with little evident concern for that whole "democracy" thing, but I have to admit.. "Iyad Allawi" has five syllables, and "Not-dam Hussein" has four.
So I was totally wrong about that. Sorry.
