Cat hunting in Wisconsin
I am filled with shame on behalf of my home.
(although after cleaning up cat vomit this morning for the 667th consecutive day, it does start to look more... no, stop it! That way leads to Bill Frist.... )
UPDATE: thanks, Governor Jim:
"I don't think Wisconsin should become known as a state where we shoot cats," said Doyle, a Democrat who neither hunts nor owns a cat. "What it does is sort of hold us up as a state that everybody is kind of laughing at right now."
I'm not sure "laughing" is the word I would use, but thanks for doing the right thing. Not a bad run for the Cheesehead state: went Blue for Kerry, got UW-Milwaukee into the Sweet 16, and got a real owner for the still-first-place-if-no-longer-undefeated Milwaukee Brewers (so long, Bud Selig, don't forget to.... well, whatever it is that you do)... and now no cat killing. Almost enough to make us forget about that Green Bay-Minnesota ugliness....
ANOTHER UPDATE: Or did I speak too soon?
What? No... look, I love cats as much as anyone, but people who mount crusades based on cuteness of animal are the worst sort of trash. There's absolutely no reason to consider cats more deserving of life than a skunk or a gopher, especially if the cat population is excessive and needs to be curbed. We've eliminated most of the major predators from the world. Arguably we have a responsibility to fill the ecological gaps: i.e. thin the cat population out when it needs thinning. That argument makes a whole lot more sense than "too cute to kill".

I'm passing your name on to my (large) cat... the two of you can discuss it!
Although I will admit that my (large) cat could certainly use some thinning...

My feral cat population is stable thanks to the Rescue who neuters and releases them.
(Furballs are typically responsible for cat vomiting. A can of oil-based tuna is a welcomed treat for both kitty and his/her human.)

Man, I have to say that this was horrifying, but not nearly so bad as the responses I've gotten from friends in both Beirut and Cairo to whom I mentioned this. Both AUC and AUB have enormous feral cat populations (AUC neuters those that they can catch, and AUB has a friends-of-the-cats society that feeds them), but people were VERY open to this strategy....I'm locking my office door now - if the cats aren't safe, who is?

Stacey-
Cats are better than the rats I've been seeing all over Cairo recently.

My husband is with you and swears that they're rats. I say that they're "Cairene Weasles." That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
