Eugenio Scalfari, founder and editor of Rome's La Repubblica newpaper made a rather a propos observation in an editorial:

The US is turning away from American democracy towards imperial democracy whose citizens have a set of values different from those of the Founding Fathers and those of other Western democracies. Scalfari says not only does imperial democracy cater to the common good of the empire (not the people) but it confers upon itself legitimizing powers: friendly powers are declared to be “democratic” even if they are not. All of North Africa, from Egypt to Morocco, is governed by non-democratic regimes. But they are 'friends' and 'allies'.
